Belton Park Trading 127: Environmental Impact Assessment Process for Prospecting Activities, Sea Concession 14B, 15B and 17B, West Coast

On 4 October 2019, Belton Park Trading 127 (Pty) Ltd (BPT127) submitted an application for a Prospecting Right with the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) to undertake offshore prospecting activities in Sea Concessions 14B, 15B and 17B, located off the West Coast of South Africa. The application was lodged in terms of Section 16 of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, 2002 (No. 28 of 2002) (MPRDA) (as amended). The proposed prospecting operations for various minerals (specifically diamond, gemstones, heavy minerals, industrial mineral, precious metals, ferrous and base metals) would entail: (i) geophysical surveys; (ii) drill sampling; and (iii) bulk (trench) sampling.

An application for Environmental Authorisation (EA) in terms of National Environmental Management Act (Act 107 of 1998) (as amended) is required for the planned prospecting activities. SLR Consulting (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (SLR) has been appointed as the independent environmental assessment practitioner to undertake the Scoping and EIA process in terms of the EIA Regulations, 2014 (as amended) for the above-mentioned project.

The Scoping Report has been updated to incorporate the comments received during the public and authority comment and review period and is submitted to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy for acceptance. If the updated Scoping Report is accepted, the project will proceed onto the EIA Phase.
