Challenge

Both the Acoustics and Vibration and Transport Advisory teams were involved in the major urban renewal project at Australian Technology Park incorporating the redevelopment of the historic Locomotive Workshops. The Locomotive Workshop comprises a two-storey sandstone and brick structure consisting of 16 equally sized bays. The building showcases heritage features including cast iron columns, wrought iron trusses and heritage artefacts throughout the precinct.

Solution

Our transport team assisted Mirvac in responding to the combined City of Sydney Council, New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services, Transport for New South Wales, Heritage, and Planning enquiries. In particular, the team provided input consisting of traffic engineering design, traffic operations, parking supply and road safety. The team also assisted with refining the urban design outcomes that sought to balance the historic fabric of the Loco sheds and the new and increased intensity of the building use.

Our Acoustics and Vibration team are worked with the tenants to undertake approximately 15,000m2 worth of commercial fitouts within the locomotive workshops to provide workspaces that meet modern user expectations for acoustic performance within heritage structures. The team are worked with clients, interior designers and design teams on overcoming the technical challenges in designing large-volume heritage structures – delivering pragmatic and practical design solutions to meet agreed performance criteria for the new workspaces.
