Challenge
4Sight (now SLR), in conjunction with Logic Group and Origin Consultants, advanced a resource consent to enable engineering works for the stabilisation and strengthening of the Cargill's Castle Ruins in Dunedin.
Originally known as The Cliffs, the castle was built in 1876 on a spectacular clifftop overlooking Dunedin and the Pacific Ocean for prominent businessman and politician Edward Bowes Cargill. The ruin is now classified as a category one scheduled ruin and is the only castle ruin in New Zealand.

Solution
The advanced resource consent covers phases to primarily stabilise the ruins, including earthquake-strengthening, repairs and the installation of floors and stair/walkway structures. The second focus of the consent is to enable public access to the site and new buildings and other site developments to be created.
Resource consent was secured on a non-notified basis and included consulting with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga to gain their affected party approval.
