Challenge
In December 2013, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF) resolved to grant planning permission for the redevelopment of the BBC Television Centre site. Located within the White City Opportunity Area, the scheme comprised the provision of 1,000 residential units, office and commercial floorspace, along with the retention of some BBC and BBC Worldwide studios. This site is now largely built.
Solution
SLR acted as transport consultant to both Stanhope plc and the BBC in the redevelopment of the Television Centre site. In liaison with the client teams as well as highways and planning officers at LBHF and TfL, we produced a transport assessment, travel plan and input to the environmental statement.
Impact
The application submission considered future use compared to the site’s previous operation, with an expected reduction in traffic generation due to a notable decrease in car parking and improved permeability thanks to enhanced pedestrian and cycle access.
Technical work required the assessment of a range of flexible commercial land use scenarios in order to provide a robust assessment of the net change in trips by car, public transport, walking and cycling.
