SLR has been awarded a research grant from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland and the Geological Survey of Ireland under the SEAI Research, Development & Demonstration Funding Programme 2021, grant number 21/RDD/725. The purpose is to locate and assess the extent of geological salt formations offshore Ireland using existing oil and gas datasets and to further assess the potential for man-made salt caverns for hydrogen storage, in collaboration with offshore wind companies.

Nick O’Neill from SLR's Dublin office is project manager of the Hydrogen Salt Storage Assessment (HYSS) project which will run for 18 months. The project team includes Associate Consultant Keith Byrne who is an experienced oil and gas explorationist with deep knowledge of the Irish offshore geology based on his career with Providence Resources Plc. The team also includes Alice Mitchinson, GIS specialist and Aldona Binchy, an environmental scientist. SLR partnered with James White of Illmatic Energy. James is an experienced geophysicist with a strong track record in offshore exploration based on his career with Tullow oil.
