Containment auditing - in association with the Chemical Industries Association

About the event

Causing pollution is an offence and anyone allowing contaminating material to enter the environment is at risk of enforcement action from the regulator.

A common way that environmental pollution can be caused is when contaminated liquids are spilt at a facility and escapes to the environment. Typically, secondary containment (bunding) is constructed around liquid storage systems but over time this can degrade and fall into disrepair.

Best practice, enshrined in CIRIA C736 ‘Containment systems for the prevention of pollution: Secondary, tertiary and other measures for industrial and commercial premises’, published in 2014 promotes the need to regularly assess the functionality of installed containment systems to ensure that they operate as anticipated when required. Failure to be able to adequately demonstrate such a formalised inspection and maintenance regime could be held against an operator by the regulator.
