Power station carbon footprint reporting and monitoring
- Client Name
- Melton Renewable Energy UK Ltd
- Location
- Various locations, UK

SLR designed and developed bespoke carbon footprint tools for a portfolio of biomass power stations, to quantify current and future carbon impacts and benefits of the assets.
Challenge
The client operates a number of biomass power stations across the UK, which generate base load ‘green’ electricity for export to the UK National Grid.
The client sought to establish a detailed understanding of the carbon footprint (including burdens and savings) of each of the assets in its portfolio, to support internal understanding and inform future stakeholder reporting.
Solution
SLR’s in-house waste and carbon modelling experts developed a series of bespoke Microsoft Excel carbon footprinting tools to document relevant inputs and outputs, including transport movements, for each individual biomass power station. Each tool was based on a unique system boundary tailored to the specific operations of the respective facility.
Each tool was structured to include input sheets which facilitate collation of defined annual operational data, from which the carbon impact reporting for an assessment year is quantified. The tools are designed to allow for year-on-year carbon footprint reporting, including the ability to input relevant performance data applicable to future years and understand carbon impact trends over time.
Impact
The project team delivered a suite of future-proofed carbon impact monitoring tools that are being actively used and updated by the client on an annual basis.
SLR was subsequently retained to review the client’s annual model updates, and to also make structural model revisions or to refresh the carbon emission factors as required.
